The Sigir, launched by Ministers Miguel Ceara Hatton, of the Environment, and Pável Isa Contreras, of Economy, Planning and Development, will strengthen the coordination, articulation and effectiveness of the different entities of the State and civil society integrated into reforestation actions and restoration, which seek to strengthen, above all, the vegetation of the water zones of the Dominican Republic.
“What we are presenting here is the expression of the most basic, because what is not measured there is no way to yield results,” said Minister Ceara Hatton.
The Ministry of Environment and Economy & Planning launched the Information and Management System for Reforestation Initiatives (Sigir), a new information and management system for reforestation initiatives.
Minister Miguel Ceara Hatto of Environment and Pavel Isa Congreras of Economy & Planning announced the commitment to know what is being planted here to strengthen the forest coverage and water basins. It is an online monitoring of all actions of the National Plan for Reforestation and Restoration of Forest Ecosystems.
“The commitment is remarkable. Every week they inform us, request seeds or trees, or request information about where they can do a planting activity. All of this is important, and it is a way for us all to become aware, to strengthen awareness of the need to regulate water flows, by guaranteeing effective reforestation,” said Minister of Economy Pavel Isa Contreras.
Meanwhile, Isa Contreras highlighted that Sigir “has been the result of the ideas, effort and continuous work between both ministries and a series of entities, committed to the sustainability of the environment in the Dominican Republic.”
The Sigir will strengthen the quality of the administrative records of reforestation actions in the country and the coordination between institutions to guarantee the effectiveness of the interventions and the optimization of the use of resources.
The platform will provide technicians with information on the geographical criteria required for planting species by life zones, through prioritization of actions in critical areas.
It was designed to identify the critical deforested areas, the intervention areas of each institution and the plant production nurseries, and to register the reforestation actions carried out by public, private, non-profit and international cooperation institutions, with impact in the border area.
The Sigir allows the semi-annual measurement and monitoring of the progress and results of reforestation activities with respect to what is programmed by the entities, in terms of physical (reforested area) and budgetary goals, and geolocation of the interventions.
It also facilitates the coordination of institutions that carry out reforestation actions, to promote medium-term forestry actions for the border area, as well as the channeling of new sources of financing.
