Francisco Peña will be PRM candidate for Santo Domingo West; Dio Astacio leads in Santo Domingo East vote

Francisco Peña won the right to compete for the ruling party in the 16 February 2024 municipal elections. He competed against incumbent mayor Jose Andujar. Peña received 11,900 votes to Andujar’s 9,515. Pre-candidate Elías Báez was third with 7,365 votes and Jose Moya fourth with 4,957 votes.

In Santo Domingo East, mayor Manuel Jimenez was the least voted. His contender Christian pastor Dio Astacio has a comfortable lead as the votes are counted.

In his remarks on the primary, Astacio highlighted the work of his predecessor, Manuel Jimenez, who was the worst performer in the election. “I value the transparency, honesty and the work carried out by our brother Manuel and I know that some things did not work out well for him, but he is an honest man and an untiring worker,” said the Christian pastor.

As reported, of the 268,462 persons eligible to vote in the primary, 37,000 valid votes were registered. Dio Astacio received 35% of the vote, his contenders Adan Peguero 22.94% and Bertico Santana 22.75%.
