President Abinader to be the PRM candidate

President Luis Abinader, as expected, won the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) primary with an overwhelming “yes” vote. The first bulletin issued by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) revealed 91% of the party membership voted for him. With 96.87% of the votes counted, 821,998 were cast for Abinader, according to JCE.

His contenders, former presidential legal advisor, lawyer Guido Gomez Mazara received 5.55% of the vote and former minister of economy; president of the Senate, Ramon Alburquerque received 2.20%; and lawyer and psychologist Delia Josefina Ortiz received 1.43% of the vote.

Ramon Alburquerque complained there had been irregularities in the process and that Abinader had availed himself of government resources.

Former Vice President Milagros Ortiz Bosch, director of Ethics in the Abinader administration, praised the organization and development of the primary.

Once the outcome was known, President Luis Abinader stated that the PRM had shown institutional and civic maturity during the electoral exercise.

“I want to tell all the militants, leaders, all the colleagues who competed today, that with humility, I accept this new opportunity to be your presidential candidate,” said the President.

He highlighted that the PRM was the only party that decided to hold primaries, “putting power directly in the hands of our militants.”
