
You have to be on the border to note the impact on the border of the shutdown of the air, sea and land border with Haiti. As reported, the border has affected the services the Haitian population receives for free at Dominican public hospitals and services Haitians have received at private clinics. Hospitals in Haiti have also been affected with cuts in supplies for services.
The Miami Herald reports that the industrial free zones of Caracol and Codevi (employing around 20,000 Haitians), and the industrial park of Port-au-Prince have been affected by input source problems and these have been forced to suspend operations. The jobs of 200,000 are at risk.
As reported in Miami Herald, dozens of cargo containers bound for the United States with Hanes t-shirts and other products from major American and Canadian brands have been paralyzed. Trucks carrying products from more than a dozen factories located on the border have not been able to cross into the Dominican Republic, from where they traditionally are shipped.
