Santiago gets a new archbishop

Pope Francis has appointed Hector Rafael Rodriguez Rodriguez as the new Metropolitan Archbishop of Santiago de los Caballeros. Santiago is the Dominican Republic’s second-largest city.

The new archbishop is currently the president of the Dominican Conference of Bishops. Former archbishop Freddy Breton had submitted a request for retirement due to his advanced age.

The new archbishop is a member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and a graduate of the Gregorian Pontifical University in Rome. Only 61 years old, bishop Rodriguez has worked closely with youth organizations for many years. In 2015 he was appointed bishop of La Vega, and just recently, he was asked to preside over the Conference of Bishops.
