Ophthalmologists urge care when observing the annular solar eclipse

The ring around the sun will not be seen again in the Dominican Republic until 1938, but everyone needs to take special care when observing the eclipse on Satrurday, 14 October 2023. Local medics warn not to use the traditional X-ray sheets or sunglasses to see the eclipse. The eclipse will be visible in Santo Domingo as of 12:34 to 2:13pm on Saturday. In Santiago, it will be visible earlier, starting 12:29pm.

People should use special eclipse glasses, colanders, slotted spoons. Anything else with small holes can be used to view the sun safely. Online, there are recommendations to even poke holes in a piece of cardboard for safe viewing.

The Saturday, 14 October 2023, annular solar eclipse will cross North, Central, and South America. It will be visible in parts of the United States, Mexico, and many countries in South and Central America. NASA’s Eclipse Explorer is an interactive map to enhance your eclipse-viewing experience.

The eclipse will occur when the moon passes partially in front of the sun.
