The Dominican Republic Embassy in Jamaica announced the signing of two agreements between the Ministry of Defense of the Dominican Republic and the Defense Force of Jamaica. The collaborations are for search and rescue operations as a way to jointly combat international organized crime.
Defense Minister Lieutenant General Carlos Luciano Díaz Morfa and the Chief of Staff of the Jamaica Defense Force, Rear Admiral Antonette Wemyss Gorman, signed the security and defense agreements. This is the first visit of the highest-ranking chief of the Jamaican defense force.
The Minister of Defense Diaz Morfa highlighted the historical importance of these agreements. He explained that the agreements are intended to help create the conditions and procedures for the naval and air units of both countries to support their respective territorial zones with rapid and effective maritime and air interdiction operations. The effort seeks to facilitate the surveillance and detection of ships and aircraft that combat illicit actions and transnational crimes in the maritime zones and air spaces of both nations.
The Vice Minister of Bilateral Foreign Policy, Ambassador José Julio Gómez, who participated on behalf of Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez, valued the official visit of Rear Admiral Wemyss Gorman to Santo Domingo for the signing of the collaboration agreements. He said the visit and signing are “an important step towards consolidating relations increasingly closer with Jamaica.”
For her part, the Dominican Ambassador to Jamaica Angie Martínez emphasized: “The signing of these important agreements represents a historic milestone that will further strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation between both nations, contributing to a safer future between our countries and the Caribbean region.”
She explained the effort also had the support of the Ministry of Foreign Relations and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
