More than a week after the arson at the Dajabon market building, the Dominican government has yet to explain or tell on who carried out the actions. The stalls were burned at the building that houses the stalls of Haitian vendors at the binational market. The reports in the media tell that from 28 to 36 stalls were damaged and that these were occupied by Haitian vendors who had left behind their merchandise when the market closed on 14 September 2023.
The fire occurred on the day the Dominican government announced the reopening of the binational market for trade under new rules.
The Haitian government has objected the new rules that include enhanced migratory controls. In Haiti, to ensure compliance with the decision of the Haitian government to not open the Haitian gates to trade, the media has reported on the vandalizing of the goods Haitian vendors have purchased for resale in Haiti. The Haitian authorities say this is contraband and seize and destroy the goods.
Now, it is known that the Haitian market vendors whose goods were damaged in the fire seek compensation from the Dominican government.
As reported in Hoy, the Haitian vendors affected by the fire at the binational market now seek financial help from the Dominican government for their millions in losses in merchandise and the repair of the modules.
The fire occurred in the hours of early morning of Wednesday, 11 October 2023 inside the binational market building on the day the vendors were authorized to reenter the markets to restock these after the shutdown in September due to the impasse over the construction in Haiti of a canal to divert a shared river water.
