Abinader says wall will be finished in February 2024

President Luis Abinader was at the border last week and said that the first phase of the construction of 54 km of wall along the border with Haiti would be finished by February 2024.

Abinader was in Elias Piña to inaugurate a section of the wall in the town of Comendador (where Joaquin Balaguer set the scene for his novel Los Carpinteros), a tiny place right on the border. This first phase of the wall is 54 kilometers long, has 19 watch towers, ten access points, and 54 kilometers of roadway alongside the wall itself.

The project has six sections divided according to the geographic location. Sections 1 and 2 are in Dajabon and Montecristi, and consist of 25.3 kilometers of wall. Section 3 is in Elias Piña and is just 2.7 kilometers long, and sections 4 and 5 are at the major crossing at Jimani and consists of 17.5 kilometers, while the last section (6) is located in Pedernales and is just 7.8 kilometers long.

The project was announced by the President back in 2022 and has taken shape over the past year and a half.
