The Ministry of Public Health says its official toll of deaths from dengue is now at 13. The Ministry has been accused of undercounting deaths, but its officials highlight the protocols and procedures are the same and are being kept.
The majority of those affected are under 19 years old, with a higher incidence among those between 10 and 19 years old, says the Ministry of Public Health.
There is an outbreak in dengue cases, and now more people see a hospital or medic when dengue is suspect. The demand for medical services has resulted in a scarcity of beds in emergency rooms, with people having to visit several hospitals before getting medical attention. Hospitals are now reacting and adding more capacity to deal with dengue.
The report corresponding to epidemiological week number 41 released yesterday by the Vice Minister of Collective Health, Dr. Eladio Pérez, indicates that in the last week 1,095 suspected cases of dengue were registered, for a total so far this year of 14,089 suspected cases. The country’s fatality rate from dengue is 0.09 percent.
The Ministry of Public Health says that people are now being tested with PCR tests to expedite the discarding of other diseases and provide adequate treatment for dengue.
