A fire broke out on Sunday, 29 October 2023 in one of the auxiliary engines of the power barge operated by the Karpowership Dominicana company, in Los Negros, Azua province.
The representative of the Turkish company Karadeniz Powership, Carlos Matamoros, told Diario Libre that the fire occurred between 9:30am and 10am on Sunday before being put out.
The Ministry of Environment reports an investigation is ongoing in the case.
In August and September 2023, the barge was in the media for contaminating with sludge the waters of the Azua area where it is docked. The Ministry of Environment reportedly fined the company.
Inhabitants in Azua and environmentalists had argued against installing of the barge that eventually obtained the governmental permits for its operation.
