The Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic unfolds its winter tourism campaign

The Dominican Republic Tourism Office has launched its winter campaign: “Change The Season.” The new campaign motivates US travelers to switch the cold for the warmth of the Caribbean sun.

In a press release, the Ministry reports the campaign’s unveiling during a media event at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. Tourism Minister David Collado was present to provide valuable insights into the boom of US tourism that has made the DR its first choice in the Caribbean.

The Ministry explains that in a survey conducted by the tourism office, 54% of tourists originate from the United States. The US is the leading source of visitors for the Dominican Republic, accounting for 50% of all inbound flights, including charter and commercial. Seven of the top 10 busiest air routes to the Dominican Republic connect to the United States. The preferred airports in the Dominican Republic are Punta Cana International (51%), Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International (15%) and Santiago’s Cibao International (10%). Visitors prefer hotel accommodations.

“This campaign embodies the essence of our Caribbean paradise and our unwavering commitment to embracing travelers. It’s an invitation to escape winter and enjoy the perpetual summer we provide,” said Tourism Minister David Collado Morales. “With more than half of tourists originating from the United States, we’ve tailored this campaign for our American friends. ‘Change The Season’ is a testament to our commitment to providing an unforgettable experience in our Caribbean paradise,” he said.

During the meeting, Collado highlighted how tourism is expected to reach a record 10 million in 2023. Tourism from the United States is up 35% since the pre-pandemic year 2019. The difference is significantly made by the boom in cruise ship travel after the opening of new terminals. Through September, 1.7 million tourists have come by cruise ship, compared to 1.4 million in all of 2019.

Puerto Plata is the country’s main port city, with two terminals. Pedernales in the southwest is scheduled to open in time for winter cruise travel and is expected to become a favorite with cruise ship travelers seeking new places to visit in the Caribbean, setting new records for arrivals to the Dominican Republic in 2024.
