Jose Alnardo Gonzalez wins the 100 m in photo finish end at the Pan Am Games

28-year old Jose Alnardo Gonzalez delivered the gold medal for the Dominican Republic in the 100 m dash in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games on Tuesday, 31 October 2023. He clocked in at 10:30, winning the race by a tenth of a second. Felipe Bardi of Brazil (10.31.302) and Emanuel Archibald (10.31.310) were the silver and bronze medal winners.

The finish of the race was so close that a photograph of the runners crossing the finish line had to be examined to decide the placement of the medal winners.

Gonzalez is the first Dominican man to win gold in the 100 m in a Pan American Games. The best the DR had done in the race was a bronze by Juan Nuñez in the 1987 Indianapolis Pan Am Games.

Gonzalez told Diario Libre in an interview that his goal is now to run the race in 9 seconds, “to earn good money.” He thanked the Ministry of Sports, the Athletics Federation, the Parni and Creso sponsorship programs and his coach Jose Rubio for their support.

He had won a silver in the event in the Central American and Caribbean Games this year.

He will compete on Wednesday in the preliminaries of the 200 m event.

He joins fellow gold medal winners for the Dominican Republic:
Athletics 4 x 400 m mixed relay: Ezequiel Suarez, Anabel Medina, Roberto King and Marileidy Paulino
