Jose Horacio Rodriguez says his party signs with Leonel Fernandez to bring diversity to Congress

Democratic Option Party deputy, Jose Horacio Rodriguez explains that the recent alliance the party has signed with the People’s Force (FP) of former President Leonel Fernandez is intended to impede the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party again having the majority in Congress, as reported in Diario Libre. The PRM has simple majority in both houses. The congressional election is scheduled for 19 May 2024.

Rodriguez says the majority of a political party damages the country and democracy.

“It is enough of listening to deputies in committees say that they must approve a project only because the Executive Branch sent it,” said Rodriguez. He argued for plurality in political parties in Congress. He said the Democratic Option party will make all the necessary electoral agreements to achieve congressional diversification.

The congressman and vice president of the Democratic Option party said that another aspect motivating the pact with the Fuerza del Pueblo is the weakness of the electoral system. He described the system as “unfair” because the candidate who gets the most votes does not always win.

For this reason, the congressman said that the parties must make the most convenient pacts to bring to Congress, to the mayoral and municipal councils, candidates that will act as counterweights to the Executive Branch.

“We need a Congress that sides with the citizens when approving loans, budgets or issues related to social justice or the environment,” he said.

In explaining the alliance, Rodriguez denied that Democratic Option will back Leonel Fernandez’s presidential aspirations in either the first or second round of the presidential election on 19 May 2024.

Rodriguez says that Opción Democrática stands behind its presidential candidate, Virginia Antares Rodriguez, his sister, and ruled out that the party may negotiate this candidacy.
