
The winner of the 2021 National Literature Award, Manuel Mora Serrano, died on Thursday, 2 November 2023.
A native of Pimentel in Duarte province, 90-year old Mora Serrano was a narrator, essayist, poet, teacher, columnist, literary researcher and lawyer.
He graduated in law and worked in the courts system in the 60s, but is best known for his literary works and his culture-focused writing in different media.
He was awarded the National Literature Prize in 2021. In 1979 he won the Siboney Prize for his novel “Goeíza,” a work dedicated to Ciguapa, a popular character in Dominican mythology.
A biography published in Listin Diario highlights that among Mora Serrano’s better-known works are Goeíza, Juego de Domínos, Español 6: Dominican and Hispano-American Literature, Decir Samán, Poetic Anthology of Domingo Moreno Jiménez. Also, The Price of Fervor, The Day God Hears the Poor, Celebration of Dark Wine, Revelations of Pimentel, El Ángel Plácido, Postumism and Vedrinism, and First Dominican avant-gardes.
