Mourning the passing of El Bacho

Always an innovator.

Raul Pérez Peña (El Bacho) was the man who made people aware of how much the sancocho stew is a part of the lives of Dominicans. For years, he organized sancocho-making competitions. He drove home the point that a sancocho here is synonymous to celebration and family and friends gathering.

For many years, he managed a large real estate marketing effort at the Listin Diario in its hey days as a leading print media. He is also remembered for his anti-Trujillo crusade.

He was a politician and even presidential candidate in the 2004 elections for the Party for Authentic Democracy (PAD).

He was an important social leader in the movements to allocate 4% of the GDP to pre-university education and the Green March, which fought against corruption and impunity in the country between 2017 and 2019.

He practiced opinion journalism in the Listín Diario, El Nacional, the magazine Ahora, and the newspapers Hoy, La Noticia and El Sol. Pérez Peña wrote the “Pancarta” column every Tuesday in the Listin Diario, where he took stock of national events and focused his gaze on historical events of national relevance.

He periodically wrote in the Areito section of the Hoy newspaper.

In 1970 he published the book “The agricultural proletariat: fundamental force of the Dominican revolution.” He also published the books: “Sólo en cine” published in 2014 and “Green March, purple stain” in 2018.

He was a foreign press correspondent for Mexico’s Excelsior for more than 13 years, and the French Press Agency. In that role, he covered historical events such as the Solidarity movement in Poland in 1981.
