
Accused of corruption in the past Danilo Medina administration, former Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta was allowed to post bail. He has been in custody at the Najayo Men’s Jail awaiting his trial that is part of the Caso Calamar.
Peralta was allowed to post bail for RD$4.5 million and cannot leave the country so he is available to attend the trial presentations. The former minister remained in jail for seven of the 18 months of preventive custody.
Peralta is accused with other defendants of using some 11 government entities for irregular expropriation of land, illegally charging sports and lottery banks, having businesses with slot machines and purchasing real estate at inflated prices.
State prosecutors named the case Caso Calamar (Squid Case). Other accused in the same case are: former Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo; former Hacienda Minister Donald Guerrero; lawyer Ángel Lockward, and former director of the State Sugar Council (CEA), Luis Miguel Piccirilo. All are awaiting trial outside of jail.
