
If the presidential elections were held today, there would be no need for a second round, since President Luis Abinader and his Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) would win comfortably, reaching 55.2% of the votes, according to the results of the Gallup-RCC Media poll, Diario Libre reports.
Abinader is distanced from his leading contenders. Former President Leonel Fernández, from the People’s Force (FP), would get 27.4% of the vote, and Santiago Mayor Abel Martínez, from the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), would receive 13.5% of the vote.
The vote favoring reelection was even higher when citizens were asked who they thought would win the election. In that case, those polled responded that Abinader (PRM) with 58.3%, followed by Fernandez (FP) with 23.1% and Martinez (PLD) with 9.8%.
When voters were asked who they would like to win the elections, the response was Abinader 54.6%, Fernandez (27.6%) and Martinez (13.2%).
The Gallup poll shows that former President Leonel Fernandez has the highest unfavorable rate with 35.7%, followed by Luis Abinader with 24.2%, Abel Martinez with 22.9%. Fernandez was President of the Republic for three terms – 1996-2000, 2004-2008, 2008-2012.
64% of those polled approved the Presidency of Luis Abinader.
69.4% feel that only a first round will be necessary to elect the President in the 19 May 2024 general election.
The presidential election is scheduled for 19 May 2024.
