
Over 50% of the food consumed in rural homes, according to new research prepared for the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development. Olaya Dotel, the deputy minister for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development, reported that women are the essential element for the development of rural areas and for providing social cohesion for their communities.
During the second day of the seminar dedicated to the Contributions of the Rural Women to the Development of the Dominican Republic, Dotel noted that rural women face several disadvantages compared to their urban counterparts. Such things as access to education, health services and potable water are just examples.
Despite these disadvantages, rural women anchor food security for their families. Other speakers called for improved infrastructure in the rural area and an increase in cooperatives and associations to improve production.
