Time to apply for the Berklee in Santo Domingo

Talented musicians can apply to attend Berklee in Santo Domingo, a music education event with teachers from Berklee College of Music that seeks to develop excellence in emerging artists. Applications are being accepted through 24 November 2023. The program began in 2022. The participants compete for a one-year Michel Camilo scholarship at Berklee College of Music.

Berklee in Santo Domingo is the result of a partnership of Berklee College of Music with the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, the National Conservatory of Music in Santo Domingo, AES Dominicana Foundation, and Itabo power generation company.

Berklee in Santo Domingo is about six days of intensive study from 10am to 5pm daily, with lectures and classes encompassing theory, ear training, improvisation, ensemble performance, and instrumental instruction. A series of master classes from Berklee faculty and special guest artists in composition, arranging, and songwriting will be conducted as part of the weeklong workshop, along with ensembles and nightly jam sessions. A final showcase concert by students will be presented on the last day to mark the end of the program.

Talented musicians can apply for Berklee in Santo Domingo through 24 November 2023. The 2024 edition will take place from 8 to 13 January 2024 at the National Conservatory of Music of Santo Domingo.

Presented by the Berklee College of Music, the Ministry of Culture, the National Conservatory of Music, the AES Dominicana Foundation and the Itabo Electricity Generating Company, Berklee in Santo Domingo is open only to residents in the Dominican Republic, who are at least 15 years old of age at the start of the program and who have been playing an instrument or singing for a minimum of six months.

Accepted candidates will attend the program free of charge, which is led by Berklee faculty, coordinated by Fernando Huergo, academic director of the program and professor in the Department of Bass, and Jason Camelio, administrative director of the program and assistant vice president of Initiatives Global.

Culture Minister Milagros Germán has explained that this is a golden opportunity for the country’s musical talents. “We are committed to supporting and promoting music education and supporting training programs of this nature, so Berklee in Santo Domingo will always have the full support of our ministry,” said Germán.
