The Dominican Republic has been placed in the top position in Latin America with regards to freedom of the press. This important laurel was awarded during the fourth edition of the Chapultepec Index of Freedom of the Press and Expression.
The Chapultepec Index takes into account several factors such as restriction on the press, the absence of laws that restrict the press, and the lack of security for the lives of journalists.
The Listin Diario’s Miguel Franjul, a regional vice-president for the InterAmerican Press Society (SIP) noted that the Dominican Republic scored over 81% on the Index, the highest score in this year’s Index. The DR was followed by Chile and Jamaica.
The new score represents a jump of three places in the Index. Topics such as cybersecurity, social platforms and legal frameworks surrounding freedom of expression were also taken into account.
