The Dominican Republic has just experienced the hottest 12 months (November 2022-October 2023) in its recorded history, according to Climate Central research on temperatures reported in 920 cities in 175 countries, including the two principal cities in the Dominican Republic. According to their recent report, the median temperature last year was 1.3° C above the average temperatures.
The National Meteorological Office (Onamet) reported a temperature of 39.2° C on 12 July 2023 in Jimaní, on the border with Haiti. That temperature is recorded as the hottest in the country this year.
Here in the Dominican Republic, most of the population would agree temperatures were out of the ordinary and summer heat unusually stepped into October.
Until April it was cool, and then from May until October, temperatures became well above average.
Until the recent rains, everyone commented on how unusually hot it was. The rains have reverted the situation, and people can delight in the relief and cooler temperatures, especially in the early morning.
The weather office is forecasting much less rains for this coming week, as the trough has moved past the country.
