Traffic jams get worse in Santo Domingo; people are avoiding underpasses

You don’t want to be driving at rush hours if you can in Santo Domingo. Traffic jams that were bad have gotten worse as sections of the city’s most important thoroughfare, the 27 de Febrero Ave. are closed off for repairs after the 18 November 2023 underpass retainer wall collapse. The collapse occurred when the rainwater levels reached a record 431 mm in around four hours.

Listin Diario reports on the long traffic jams in the city.

Meanwhile, the Dominican Association of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (Codia) assures drivers that the underpasses, tunnels and overpasses are safe. But former Codia presidents Cristian Rojas and Teodoro Tejada called for the government to review all the underpasses in major metropolitan areas.

At the same time, Minister of the Presidency Joel Santos says that the repairs to the 27 de Febrero Avenue underpass will take months. He said the Ministry of Public Works and the National Institute of Transit and Transport (Intrant) are drafting the plan to divert traffic.

The Abinader administration created a committee under engineer Osiris de Leon to review important public roads and their safety.
