Recent news reports are that a working group at the United Nations has issued an opinion regarding the legal process under which former Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez is being prosecuted, calling this prosecution illegal and improper.
The Minister of Foreign Relations Roberto Alvarez and Assistant Attorney General Yeni Berenice Reynoso were prompt to deny any authority of the UN group to interfere in Dominican legal procedures. Alvarez was quite clear when he stated that the Working Group on Arbitrary Detainees at the UN has no authority whatsoever to issue sentences or even an opinion, as this he said is strictly something for the UN Committee on Human Rights to do. Alvarez called the opinion issued by the group “absurd, silly, and childish.”
