President Luis Abinader announced he has asked Vice President Raquel Peña to continue in the position. The Vice President has been his right hand in the present administration.
President Luis Abinader has delegated critical and strategic areas to the Vice President. She lead the Covid-19 cabinet at the start of the government. She has represented the government in important negotiations abroad to promote investments and international relations – South Korea, India, Japan, Spain, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The President has also delegated security issues to the Vice President this year.
The President made the announcement when accepting to be the presidential candidate for the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC). Vice President Raquel Peña was also present for the proclamation.
The PRSC was fourth in number of votes in the 2020 presidential elections with slightly over 73,000 votes when supporting the candidacy of former President Leonel Fernandez of the Fuerza del Pueblo. Fernandez is running again in the 2024 election. Polls indicate Fernandez is the strongest contender to President Abinader’s bid for reelection. The same polls indicate that Abinader will win in the first round of the presidential elections.
