At the request of political parties, the Central Electoral Board (JCE) for a third time extended the deadline for the registration of the candidates for city mayor and other municipal roles nationwide. The extension is now for Friday, 1 December 2023 at 8pm.
The Plenary Session of the JCE made this decision after considering the requests presented by the Social Democratic Institutional Bloc (BIS), the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), the People’s Force Party (FP), the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD). This extension does not affect the development of the electoral calendar, as reported by the JCE.
At the previous deadline, the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) registered the candidacy of Domingo Contreras (PLD) for mayor and Janet Camilo (PRD) for deputy mayor of the National District.
The ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) has yet to register the candidacy of incumbent Carolina Mejia for reelection. Reports are President Luis Abinader wants to convince Mejia to run again because she is the highest ranked in the list of PRM pre-candidates. Meanwhile, vehicles with signage on the Carolina Mejia reelection bid can already be seen circulating in the National District.
The parties that had not presented their candidates argued that they were delayed by the Saturday, 18 November floods and decisions of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) after some candidates were contested.
