
The larger political parties finally have announced their candidates for mayors in the 18 February 2024 municipal elections. It took three postponements of the deadline for the registration of the candidates for 158 municipalities with the Central Electoral Board (JCE), but the names are now official as of Friday, 1 December 2023.
Greater Santo Domingo encompasses the largest concentration of voters in the country. The announced candidates for the National District and Santo Domingo province mayoral races are:
National District (capital city)
Incumbent Carolina Mejia and deputy mayor Sergio Stalin Alcántara Jiménez will repeat for the ruling party and seek reelection for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). Mejia is the daughter of former President Hipolito Mejia. She will compete against the coalition formed by the
Dominican Liberation Party, the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), and the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) that earlier had registered Domingo Contreras (PLD) and Yanet Camilo (PRD) as part of their alliance for select municipal and congressional candidacies.
Santo Domingo North
Current mayor Carlos Guzmán seeks to be reelected. His deputy mayor will be Mari Carmen Espinosa López, who is the wife of former mayor René Polanco. He will compete against deputy Betty Geronimo (PRM), who is the wife of former Santo Domingo North mayor Francisco Fernandez.
Santo Domingo East
In Santo Domingo Este, the People’s Force of former President Fernandez has registered former deputy Julio Romero. 14 years ago, Romero was accused of having sexual relations with a minor. Romero will compete against Dio Astacio (PRM) and Luis Alberto Tejada (PLD).
