Kenya sends advance mission to Haiti

Haiti Times reports that a mission from Kenya landed in Port-au-Prince on last week as part of preparations for the upcoming arrival of the controversial Multinational Mission to Support Security (MSS) the United Nations approved two months ago.

As reported, the delegation had met on Tuesday, 5 December 2023 with Haitian acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry and government members. The delegation also met with members of the Haitian High Council of the Transition (HCT), namely Mirlande Hyppolite Manigat, Calix Fleuridor and Laurent St Cyr. The Kenyans also had a working session with the high command of the Haitian National Police.

The United Nations representative in Haiti, Ulrika Richardson, has indicated that the multinational force that Kenis will head is expected to arrive in Haiti in the first quarter of 2024.

However, according to the press release from the Haitian newspaper Le Nouvelliste, a lot will depend on the financial aspects of the intervention and the judicial system of Kenya which needs to review the sending of its troops overseas.

It is expected that this effort is a step forward in bringing Haitian government from under the control of criminal gangs.

The effort has the support of the United States and will comprise some 2,500 troops, of which about 1,000 will come from Kenya.

Richardson of the UN has noted that over five million people in Haiti need humanitarian assistance.
