Napoleon Ricardo Estevez Lavandier to preside Constitutional Court

The National Council of the Magistracy chose Napoleón Ricardo Estévez Lavandier, Fidias Federico Aristy Payano, Amaury Reyes, Sonia Díaz Ynoa and Armi Ferreira for nine year terms in the Constitutional Court, the court of last resort in the Dominican Republic. Their terms begins on 16 December 2023.

The decision of the judges adds two women judges to the three already in the 13-member court. The women judges are the two new – Sonia Diaz Ynoa and Armi Ferreira, and the three current women judges Alba Luisa Beard Marcos, Maria del Carmen Santana and Eunisis Vasquez Acosta.

The court also chose Miguel Aníbal Valera as first substitute judge and Eunice Vásquez Acosta as second substitute.

The new judges will join Jose Alejandro Ayuso, Miguel Anibal Valera, Alba Luisa Beard Marcos, Manuel Ulises Bonnelly Vega, Domingo Antonio Gil, Maria del Carmen Santana, Jose Alejandro Vargas and Eunisis Vasquez Acosta.

These replace retiring judges, Constitutional Court president Milton Ray Guevara and judges Rafael Diaz Filpo, Lino Vasquez Samuel, Victor Castellanos and Justo Pedro Castellanos.

The new judges will be sworn in on 28 December at 9am at the Presidential Palace. The term of the retiring five ends on 27 December.
