World Bank to lend US$225 million so government can collect more for power supplied

The World Bank approved lending the Dominican Republic US$225 million for the Distribution Efficiency Improvement and Utility Strengthening Project. The project development objective is to improve the governance and financial and environmental sustainability of the electricity distribution companies in the Dominican Republic. Power distribution is primarily carried out by companies owned by the Dominican government.

The World Bank explains that the project seeks to rehabilitate 1,342 km of transmission lines and incorporate 225,826 clients that today do not pay for the service. The World Bank project calls for replacing deteriorated meters and improving commercialization and meter measuring systems to improve billing and collection for power served.

The World Bank says that this project is the first of three World Bank investments to support the Dominican government’s vision for the sustainable development of the electricity sector. The multiphase program for the Dominican Republic has an estimated financing amount of US$505 million over ten years to improve access to a more reliable, efficient and environmentally sustainable electricity supply for the entire population.
