
President Luis Abinader pressed the button that activated the new cable car system in Santiago de los Caballeros on Friday, 15 December 2023. This is part of a larger system that includes an urban rail system.
The mass transit system is designed to reduce traffic and ease movement in the nation’s second-largest city. It will service much of the area to the south of the urban area and will connect with a rapid rail system. The cable car system is expected to go into service in the first quarter of 2024.
Starting in La Yaguita del Pastor, the cable car system will serve Bella Vista, La Barranquita, Los Jazmines, Villa Olímpica, El Ensueño and Pekin. A population of 120,000 persons living in southern areas of the city of Santiago de los Caballeros will benefit.
