Urban renewal project alongside Ozama River inaugurated

President Luis Abinader led the inauguration ceremony of the Nuevo Domingo Savio urban renewal project on the west bank of the Ozama River. The government says a population of 43,000 people living in the slums of La Ciénega and Los Guandules are directly impacted.

The project was begun in 2017 during the Danilo Medina administration and is carried out by the Unit for the Rehabilitation of Neighborhoods and Environment (URBE) created at that time. The entity relocated 2,500 families and 8,800 people who were at risk of suffering from the constant flooding of the river.

Speaking at the sports center, one of the complementary works built by the government as part of the project, President Abinader called the project an example of the continuity of state, the collaboration of public-private alliance, community empowerment and inter-institutional work.

President Abinader praised the director of Urbe, Jose Miguel Gonzalez Cuadra. Gonzalez Cuadra began the project in 2017. Abinader also spoke of the ecological value of the project.

The Nuevo Domingo Savio project encompasses the Paseo del Rio, a river-fronting four-lane avenue, sports facilities including a covered sports pavilion for 750 people, a little league baseball field for children, sports courts, public recreation spaces including the La Ballena Park and Los Pescadores Plaza for area fishermen, basic health services center, and new access roads for garbage collection services, and 911 emergency assistance service.
