When in the opposition, candidates and Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) spokespeople were very critical of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) administration’s spending on political and government advertising and propaganda.
This week, the citizen advocacy organization, Citizen Participation (PC) says that the Abinader administration has bested the Medina administration in spending in advertising and propaganda. PC says the Abinader administration has spent upwards of RD$7.9 billion in advertising and propaganda. PC described the amount as the largest spent for advertising and propaganda in the country’s history.
The PRM won the Presidency promising change from corruption and wasteful spending.
In its “Balance 2023” report, the non-partisan organization noted that spending in advertising and propaganda has increased since 2021, when it was at RD$3.65 billion.
“The largest expense of the government of Danilo Medina in advertising-propaganda was RD$5.72 billion. An analysis of the net present value, as of today, reveals spending of RD$7.2 billion pesos. Therefore, as of today, the current government would be spending RD$680 million, more than Danilo Medina’s, which already spent a lot,” emphasizes the non-governmental organization.
