National District senator Faride Raful has made peace with President Luis Abinader and accepts she will not be the party’s nominee to senator for the capital city.
Listin Diario reports that other names of possible senators are the president of the Alianza Pais political party Guillermo Moreno, Tourism Minister David Collado, Chamber of Deputies president Alfredo Pacheco, former Vice President Milagros Ortiz Bosch, Public Works Minister Deligne Ascencion, Industry & Commerce Minister Victor Bisono, among others.
For months there has been speculation the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party has plans to choose Guillermo Moreno of the Alianza Pais party for the position. Moreno has been the Alianza Pais presidential candidate in past elections and is one of the strongest critics of former President Leonel Fernandez. Leonel Fernandez is President Luis Abinader’s strongest contender, according to recent polls.
In announcing she would not seek reelection, Raful said she accepted the “strategic decision” made by the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). In September 2023, Raful had reconfirmed she sought to compete in the May 2024 congressional elections.
In a short video, the legislator explained President Luis Abinader had asked her to assume a greater responsibility and that she has accepted the challenge with the “firm commitment to work for the well being of our country.”
In July 2023, the board of the PRM reported to the Central Electoral Board that it would be selecting the party candidacies for the National District and the provinces of Santiago, Barahona, La Vega, La Altagracia, La Romana, Santiago Rodríguez, San Juan de la Maguana and San José de Ocoa. The PRM has yet to announce its candidates for the National District, Santiago, La Altagracia, La Romana, Hermanas Mirabal and San José de Ocoa.
