Long lines that defied the rainy weather formed in the very early hours of last Friday, 22 December 2023, as thousands of Haitians sought to enter the bi-national market in Dajabon on the border. They were photographed and fingerprinted by members of the Specialized Corps of Frontier Security (Cesfront) and agents from the Migration Agency, Diario Libre reports. At 8am, Dominican authorities began the process, and, according to reports, some 16,000 Haitians participated in the market on Friday.
This comes on the heels of a push by Haitians to return to the market after President Luis Abinader relaxed the measures put in place in September 2023 as part of the Dominican reaction of the renewed construction of a canal on the Haitian side of the Dajabon River.
