Time passes. Former President Leonel Fernandez celebrated his 70th birthday on 26 December 2023. Fernandez was President of the Republic 1996-2000, 2004-2008 and 2008-2012. He seeks to return to the Presidency in the May 2024 general elections. Polls indicate he is the strongest contender to incumbent President Luis Abinader’s reelection aspirations.
Fernandez is running for the Fuerza del Pueblo (People’s Force), the political party that he created when he split from the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) after the party echelons chose Gonzalo Castillo to be the presidential candidate in the 2020 presidential election.
Speaking to his followers gathered for his birthday celebration, Fernández stated: “I said that we as a party were going to evolve in stages. “2021 was the year of takeoff, 2022 was the year of advancement, 2023 was the year of consolidation with two million members, and 2024 was the year of victory.”
