Deputies approve bill to grant special powers to reduce tariffs on imported food

The Chamber of Deputies passed the bill that grants the President of the Dominican Republic special powers to reduce import customs tariffs to zero in “emergency” situations.

These tariff reductions do not apply to everything, however. For example sugar is not on the list.

These special powers are for a limited time, six months only.

The opposition parties said that there was the possibility that the government might favor certain parties on the importation of these emergency goods or that local producers might be harmed via unfair competition.

It should be noted that the legislation only covers food products.

The bill now moves to the Senate for approval or amendment. The ruling Modern Revolutionary Party is the majority in the Senate.
