Environmentalists suspect commercial interested parties ordered the dispersing of chemicals to dry out mangroves in wetlands on the north coast of northeastern Samana province. Environmentalists have speculated that the chemical could have been Glyphospate spread by drones, as reported in Diario Libre.
The affected wetlands are located in an area of high interest for tourist development because the Ministry of Tourism is extending the road from El Limon for easy access to these beach areas in El Estillero.
The Ministry of Environment says it will work to restore the red mangroves in the area.
