National Intelligence Agency (DNI) structure and roles amended

The Chamber of Deputies passed on Friday, 29 December 2023 the bill that creates the National Intelligence Agency (DNI) to strengthen national security.

The Dominican Republic currently has a National Intelligence Department that will now be transformed into an agency that will work together with various state institutions. The amendments are made to ensure the compliance of the unit’s national intelligence system with the Constitution.

Deputy Elpidio Báez, from the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) said the bill will bring enhanced coordination between all state and military institutions that handle sensitive information. With this new aspect, Báez said that the state would prevent sensitive organizations from hiding information and also eliminate the predominance of certain public institutions and reduce the possibilities of political persecution.
