Presidency announces new rules for state advertising and propaganda

The Presidency issued Decree 1-24 calling for increased regulation of government advertising and propaganda. The advertising and propaganda during the Abinader administration has reached recent highs, most of which is considered political patronage and blatant wasteful spending of taxpayer money.

President Luis Abinader signed a decree that restricted the type of government advertising that can be placed, established the criteria for hiring and made a series of prohibitions.

With his executive order number 1-24, the president prohibited including the voice, image or any other personal reference that individualizes or distinguishes public officials, or that propaganda highlight the achievements of this administration or the objectives achieved.

It also prohibits the use of official advertising for propaganda purposes or to support political parties or candidates, official or not.

The spokesman for the Presidency said that the spending in advertising and propaganda chapter will continue the same at RD$3.5 billion. The government deems the spending is efficient.

Somos Pueblo news programs have aired providing evidence of the excesses in spending in advertising and propaganda. The popular news commentary program’s YouTube channel was recently hacked.

Likewise, Participacion Ciudadana, the civic watchdog organization, says advertising and propaganda spending in the Abinader administration is at RD$7.9 billion.
