Environment Minister Miguel Ceara-Hatton signed an agreement for collaboration with the Coalition for the Defense of Protected Areas. “It is best for all public institutions that there is always oversight between the government and the civic society sectors. That is always important; we want that social audit of government management,” said President Luis Abinader, when witnessing the signing of the agreement to optimize the National System of Protected Areas (SINAP) and the environmental policies in force in the country.
The President stressed: “In this agreement, we will not agree on everything because there will be moments when we will disagree, but the important thing is to agree to protect and save our natural resources for our children, granddaughters and grandsons because if there is no environmental sustainability, there will be no true economic development.”
The agreement was signed by the Minister of the Environment, Miguel Ceara Hatton. Those signing for the Coalition were:
Eleuterio Martínez, from the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic; Yolanda León, from Grupo Jaragua, and Editrudis Beltrán Crisóstomo, rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), representing the Environmental Commission of that academy.
Also signing were Nelson Bautista, from the Acción Verde Foundation; Eduardo José Rafael Rodríguez Santana, from the Cibao Ecological Society (Soeci); Andrés Ferrer Benzo, from the Moscoso Puello Foundation; Esteban Polanco, from the Federation of Peasants towards Progress; Nelson Manuel Pimentel Reyes, from the Institute of Lawyers for the Protection of the Environment (Insaproma); Ariel Contreras, from Cua Conservation Agency and Dayana Caso, from Guakia Ambiente.
