Investigations continue into damaged mangroves in Samana

The Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Protection of the Environment has initiated an investigation to determine the causes of the degradation that occurred in mangroves in a wetland located in the Samaná province, reports Diario Libre. The Ministry of Environment’s first investigation did not show traces of glyphosate, a chemical that environmentalists speculate could have caused the degradation of the mangroves.

Judge Francisco Contreras, head of this branch of the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic, says he has asked the Environmental Commission of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) for a technical report that could shed light on what caused the drying up of the mangroves.

The section of mangroves is in a coastal area ripe for real estate development for vacation homes. The practice has been for developers to cause environmental damage, pay the fine, and continue with the project.
