The Botellas de Amor Foundation reports collecting more than three million plastic bottles in the fourth version of “Plastic for Toys.” Washed plastic bottles were exchanged for toys on Saturday, 6 January 2024, Three Kings Day.
The National District Mayor’s Office says the event sought to raise awareness about environmental protection and bring happiness to city residents. The activity is in its fourth version.
The organizers say that the amount of bottles collected surpassed the 2.2 million bottles collected in 2022.
The City Council of the National District says 7,323 toys were delivered in exchange for the bottles.
The bottles will be recycled and converted into construction materials for homes, playgrounds and urban furniture. The foundation will use them to create benches and children’s games for the city’s parks.
The amount of plastics collected this year “demonstrates our community’s growing commitment to the environment,” said Mayor Carolina Mejía.
“We are transforming plastic into smiles, but also into structures and furniture that benefit our city,” she stressed.
