President Abinader and Vice President Peña open the electoral campaigns for mayors

President Luis Abinader and Vice President Raquel Peña attended the official start of the political campaigns for Greater Santo Domingo (National District and Santo Domingo province) mayors at the Palacio de los Deportes in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. The municipal elections are scheduled for Sunday, 18 February 2024. Some 158 city mayors and 1,164 need to be elected nationwide. Likewise, another 235 municipal directors and 735 municipal members need to be elected.

Attending the event for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party were the party’s candidate for the National District, incumbent Mayor Carolina Mejía. President Abinader also backed the aspirations of Betty Geronimo who is running for the PRM in Santo Domingo North and Dio Astacio, who is running for the party in Santo Domingo East.

During the event at the Palacio de Deportes, capital city mayor Carolina Mejia forecasted a crushing victory for the ruling party and said this victory will be a first step to the continuing government of the ruling party. The presidential and congressional election is set for 19 May 2024. Mejia is secretary for the ruling PRM party.

The ruling party’s main contender in the National District mayor race is Domingo Contreras. He is running for a coalition of the Fuerza del Pueblo and Dominican Liberation Party. Contreras lost to Carolina Mejia in the 2020 mayor race.
