First phase of extensive reading comes to an end in Alexis Medina corruption case

It took three years to read the accusatory file against Alexis Medina, brother of former President Danilo Medina, who is accused of using his family relation to receive lucrative contracts in the electricity sector. The case was named “AntiPulpo” (Anti-Octopus Case).

The situation brings to mind the phrase “Justice delayed is justice denied.” The phrase refers to when a legal system fails to provide justice in a timely manner, it can lead to frustration, loss of faith in the system.

The prosecutors on 9 January 2024 are expected to conclude the reading of the factual account against 48 defendants (27 persons and 21 companies) included in the Alexis Medina Sanchez case. None of the accused are under arrest.

Prosecutor Elizabeth Paredes said that the reading is at page 998 out of 1,168 that are part of the first phase of the trial ongoing under judges Claribel Nivar, Yissell Soto and Clara Castillo of the Second Collegiate Court.

Once this first part is concluded, the Public Ministry will present evidence against the accused, including 160 witnesses, 1,946 documentary evidence, 81 expert evidence, 115 materials, and the tax file. The presentation of assets subject to confiscation, 60 properties, 67 vehicles; RD$553,063,184, and US$1,495,682, delivered or immobilized; and then the conclusions of the 3,445 pages the Public Ministry has presented in the accusation.
