Spain-based EcoAcero will build a rebar mill in Santo Domingo to serve the growing construction industry in the Caribbean and Central America. Dominican Republic-based conglomerate the Estrella Group has signed a contract to take delivery of equipment for an electric arc furnace (EAF) steel rebar mill it plans to build.
The mill will use German state-of-the-art technology for the new plant, which will include a reheating furnace for billets and a continuous single-strand rolling mill.
SMS describes Estrella Group as “one of the largest construction services and products group” in the Dominican Republic and says the EAF mill investment will “reinforce its vertical integration.”
Estrella Group is a collection of companies that produce cement, concrete, metal structures and other types of infrastructure and buildings. The company was the leading local partner in Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in the DR.

As reported, the mill will have the capacity to produce up to 400,000 mt of rebar per year. The mill is scheduled to be commissioned at the beginning of 2025, German plantmaker SMS Group announced.
SMS Group says it will provide mill equipment, including the electric arc furnace that can be charged with scrap. The new rebar mill will introduce a versatile range of rebar to the market, tailored to meet the demands of different construction industry segments.
