
After months of speculations, the naming of former presidential candidate Guillermo Moreno as senator for the National District for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) is official. Incumbent senator Faride Raful of the PRM had aspired to repeat in the position.
Moreno is the president of the Alianza Pais political party. He has aspired to the Presidency on several occasions. Moreno sought the presidency of the Republic for Alianza Pais in the elections of 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020. His best performance was in the 2016 election when his candidacy received more than 84,000 votes, or about 1.83% of the total, to take the lead in minority parties.
Interestingly, Guillermo Moreno was not present when the president of the PRM, Jose Ignacio Paliza made the announcement. Present for the Alianza Pais party were its executive secretary, Fidelio Despradel and deputy Pedro Martinez. These announced the party will back the reelection of President Luis Abinader.
During the Leonel Fernandez presidency he served as National District prosecutor from 1996 to 1997. Subsequently, he would become one of the most outspoken critics of corruption in the Fernandez administration.
In the 2024 senatorial race, he will be running against Omar Fernandez, son of former President Leonel Fernandez. Fernandez had a first term as deputy and now his father’s party has named him candidate to the senator seat.
The politician and university professor of law, Moreno prosecuted the former President Leonel Fernandez. The case against Fernandez and the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) for alleged corruption and asset laundering would be filed by then National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso in 2013. Reynoso is today an adjunct Attorney General.
During the first presidential term of Leonel Fernández, Guillermo Moreno was appointed as prosecutor of the National District in 1996, a position he held until 1997.
Guillermo Moreno has been the most vocal politician to criticize corruption in the Fernandez governments.
The formal announcement will be made on Sunday, 14 January 2024 at 10am at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center Volleyball Pavilion when the political alliance is scheduled to be confirmed.
