With seven days of games to go, it seems it will be the Estrellas Orientales vs the Tigres del Licey in the playoffs. On 9 January 2024, the Licey defeated the Escogido Lions to gain a three-game lead over the third-place runner-up. The Gigantes del Cibao defeated the Estrellas, but their chances of being a playoff team are minuscule. They would have to win all their next games.
Meanwhile, the quality of the Dominican baseball league has been enhanced by the many MLB team players added to the playing rosters.
The Estrellas, with the bat of Fernando Tatis Jr (San Diego Padres), Robinson Cano (former Seatle Mariners), and Raimel Tapia (Boston Red Sox), continue to lead in the round-robin stage of the Dominican Professional Winter Baseball Championship. The Estrellas have a record of eight games won and three losses.
The Tigres del Licey team is touching the toes of the Estrellas, and also have many MLB big names on their roster, including Miguel Andujar (Pittsburgh Pirates), Aristides Aquino (formerly Cincinnati Reds), Francisco Mejia (Tampa Bay Rays). The Tigres’ standing is seven wins and four losses.
The other capital city team, Leones del Escogido is playing with Jorge Mateo (Baltimore), Franchy Cordero (Boston), Franmil Reyes (Kansas City Royals) and Starling Marte (Mets). The red team is in third place, with four wins and seven losses.
The Gigantes are in last place with three wins and eight losses. Throughout the tournament, several MLB big names played for them, including Marcell Ozuna (Atlanta Braves), Luis Garcia (Washington Nationals), Jose Siri (Tampa Bay Rays), Leury Garcia (White Sox) and Jeimer Candelario (Chicago Cubs). The Gigantes had won the regular season.
The next games to determine the playoff twosome are scheduled from 10 January to 14 January 2024, with a rest day on 11 January. The teams then resume play and rest again on 15 January, with the last of the 18 round-robin games to be played on 18 January.
