The president of the Chamber of Deputies is in China, accepting an invitation to visit made by the Chinese government. Alfredo Pacheco is visiting China from 15 to 20 January at the invitation of Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee.
Pacheco is the president of the Chamber of Deputies. He seeks to be reelected in the position in the 19 May 2024 election. He is a high-ranking member of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). His wife is the director of the Passports Agency.
66-year old Leji is also the third-ranking member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, China’s top decision-making body.
The Chamber of Deputies is on vacation after the sessions closed on 12 January and will not reopen until 27 February 2024.
