Legislators in China on official visit

The president of the Chamber of Deputies Alfredo Pacheco (PRM-National District) leads a delegation of Dominican legislators on an official visit to the People’s Republic of China from 15 to 20 January 2024. The legislators say they seek to reach public policy agreements for the benefit of both countries.

Alfredo Pacheco, and the member deputies of the Dominican-Chinese Parliamentary Group and spokespersons for the deputies, were received in Beijing by Dominican ambassador Briunny Garabito and by Yu Chunsheng, vice president of the Public Finance Commission and the Economy of the National People’s Assembly (APN).

In addition to Pacheco, the other legislators who traveled with Pacheco to China are: the deputy and vice president of the Dominican-Chinese Parliamentary Group, Rogelio Alfonso Genao Lanza, and committee members Lucrecia Leyba, Sandra Abinader, Dolores Fermín, Román de Jesús Vargas and Benedicto Hernández participate.

Also on the trip are the spokespersons for the deputies of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the Dominican Revolutionary Party, Julito Fulcar, Luis Henríquez and Saury Mota, respectively.

On the first day in China, the legislators visited the facilities of the Institute of Public Security Studies of Tsinghuam University, a platform for technological innovation.

China had reported that the president of the Chamber of Deputies had accepted the invitation to visit made by the Chinese government. Alfredo Pacheco and fellow legislators are visiting China from 15 to 20 January at the invitation of Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee. 66-year old Leji is also the third-ranking member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, China’s top decision-making body.

Pacheco is the president of the Chamber of Deputies. He seeks to be reelected in the position in the 19 May 2024 election. He is a high-ranking member of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). His wife is the director of the Passports Agency.

The Chamber of Deputies is on vacation after the sessions closed on 12 January and will not reopen until 27 February 2024.

Xinhua News of China issued a release stating that Pacheco said in China that the Dominican Republic abides by the one-China principle, and it is the consensus of all political parties in the Dominican Republic to deepen relations with China.

Xinhua News also reported that Pacheco held a Zoom conference while in China with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on Wednesday, 17 January.

As reported, while in China, Pacheco also held a Zoom conversation with Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee.
